Our last gathering was a success, and we saved the last tree on the 1000 Cloverdale block. Let's save another one.

Plans have been filed to remove this healthy, cooling and carbon-sequestering tree for a driveway. Small design changes could save the tree and build the same amount of housing and parking. Seattle’s building department (SDCI) won’t ask for them.

Sequoias are the largest living beings on the planet. And true to its species, this tree is 63” in diameter and can be seen from across Green Lake Park. It is one of only about 200 mature giant sequoias left in Seattle’s neighborhoods. But its size and rarity isn’t stopping SDCI from fast-tracking its removal through their inadequate policies and enforcement.

The plans for this site show a new single family home, a driveway running through the Giant Sequoia, and wasted space on either side. Our architect’s analysis shows that small changes will not only save the Giant Sequoia, but using land more efficiently could save most of the other large trees on this wooded lot.

Seattle’s summer heat is breaking records and AC is essential for those who can afford it. Yet Seattle’s new tree ordinance allows all trees to be removed for development. We reject this old way of thinking and zero-sum-gain mentality.

Join us in asking SDCI to save the Green Lake Giant Sequoia.
