The Brandon Street Weeping Willow is beloved by many who live in this Columbia City neighborhood, especially the children who run to be with the tree and love to walk under the green canopy which cascades down. With an almost 4-foot diameter trunk, this willow is a longtime resident of the neighborhood.

Neighbors appreciate this willow tree for its beauty, the shade it provides, and its ability to filter stormwater.

Even though it’s close to the edge of the lot, a developer plans to cut it down, along with a large Leyland cypress, and build four homes on the property. With small adjustments to the site design, the same number and size of new homes could be built.

I request a public meeting regarding #3044460-LU. This unit lot subdivision (ULS) fails to incorporate parent lot subdivision criteria and SDCI guidance that requires prioritizing retention of two Tier 2 trees along S. Brandon St. The four single-family detached homes could be reconfigured with shared walls to retain these trees (see attached sample plan). The condition of both trees is good, and they provide significant health and environmental benefits to the entire neighborhood.

Trees and People Coalition, and neighbors of the project, are hosting a meeting on Wednesday Sept 30, 6-7 pm at the Seattle Public Library Columbia Branch at 4721 Rainier Ave S.
