Two large Port Orford cedar trees (also known as Lawson cypress) are scheduled to be cut down on July 1 for development. These trees are decades old and each over 30" in diameter. They help stabilize a hillside above a steep slope. The largest tree grow on the new subdivided property line–meaning nothing can ever be built on that spot, and there is no reason to remove it. Additionally, the removal was illegally scheduled within the 21-day petition period after the permit was issued.

Port Orford cedars are resilient trees valued for their exceptional ability to fight pollution and filter stormwater The City required a "landslide covenant" for this project, absolving them of all responsibility if the slope fails

How to Help

Write to Mayor Bruce Harrell (bruce.harrell@seattle.gov) and District 2 Councilmember Tammy Morales (tammy.morales@seattle.gov) Tell them how the tree removal at 3854 Cascadia Ave. S. would affect you. Tell them we need legislation that actually protects Tier 2 trees from removal during development, which Seattle’s current tree ordinance does not do.
