Kaia grows at the top of a steep hill and is visible for several blocks. An unusually symmetrical Douglas fir, Kaia anchors the steep slope and protects the neighborhood from winter flooding and summer heat.
The Columbia City community became alarmed when an illegal tree removal notice was published for 38 trees on this site, including Kaia and many trees growing in neighbors’ yards. Thanks to quick action by the community, SDCI was compelled to ask the developer to withdraw the cutting notice, saving the trees in neighbors’ yards.
Recently, even though no removal notice was issued, this tree was buried by excavators and is not expected to survive. An AIA architect analyzed the site and noted that the site design could easily have incorporated this single, magnificent tree. All of the other trees to be removed are on the edges of the lot, out of the footprint of new homes.
